Creating Environmentally Friendly and Sustainable Bio-Chemicals

Bumbuku Creatives produced a third animation for the INTERfaces project, using visual storytelling to explain its interdisciplinary structure and collaborative innovation in green chemistry. We crafted a central metaphor of “coming together” to reflect how diverse institutions and researchers unite to advance sustainable chemical production. By translating complex scientific concepts into an accessible narrative, the animation captures both the technical and human aspects of this ambitious EU-funded initiative.

CLIENT – AARHUS UNIVERSITY / INTERFACES PROJECT
CHALLENGE

Reimagining one of the world’s most polluting industries by developing sustainable, enzyme-based alternatives inspired by biology — all while bridging diverse academic and industrial fields.

OUTCOME
Delivering a dynamic animation that told the story of adaptation and resilience, highlighting how the project embraced digital tools to continue offering high-quality training.
IMPACT

Highlighting the potential of cross-sector collaboration to transform science communication, and making complex research accessible to both experts and the public.

INTERfaces is revolutionising the future of chemical production by mimicking biological metabolism — replacing pollutive industrial methods with natural, sustainable processes. At the heart of this transformation is a deeply collaborative structure, bridging disciplines and institutions to drive innovation in green chemistry.

For this third film in our series, Bumbuku Creatives was tasked with visualising this complex ecosystem. Our goal was to explain how INTERfaces brings together academia and industry, researchers and innovators, across disciplines and borders — all working jointly towards a shared vision of sustainability.

The creative concept of “coming together” became our central metaphor. We used animation to symbolise how these diverse entities align, intertwine, and grow stronger together — much like biological systems themselves.

In addition to the animation, we designed a poster to complement and promote the project visually. The poster distilled the film’s core themes into a single powerful image, offering INTERfaces a versatile visual tool for use in conferences, research presentations, and outreach events.

The challenge was significant. Not only did we need to communicate a technically complex scientific process, but also capture the human and structural story behind it: the integration of different methodologies, the collaborative breakthroughs, and the shared commitment to changing the industry from within.

The final animation — supported by the poster — distils this intricate landscape into a clear, engaging story that highlights the value of collaboration and the promise of sustainable innovation. It’s a testament to the power of visual storytelling in amplifying science — and to INTERfaces’ vision of a greener, smarter future.

Successful applied science not only needs to be interdisciplinary, but should also be at the interface between groundbreaking research and industrial implementation. Therefore, the strong involvement of three large companies and ten high-tech start-ups is crucial to achieving our goals in this project.

DIGITAL STORYTELLING TRAININGS TO HELP SCIENTISTS SELF-SUFFICIENTLY TELL THE STORY OF THEIR OWN DATA
One of our main missions is to help organisations self-sufficiently tell their stories. In order to achieve this goal, at the end, we will give Digital Storytelling Trainings to researchers and scientists involved in the project in order to help them tell the story of their research findings to communicate their data to the public and open communication within the industry to implement such innovation.

SDG IMPACT

This project contributes to 3 SDGs and as Bumbuku we are trilled to be part of these goals.
