Garment Industry Campaign Animations

Bumbuku crafted impactful animations for the Clean Clothes Campaign, highlighting wage discrimination faced by garment industry workers. The animations served as a powerful means to raise awareness and advocate for fair compensation within the industry.

 CLIENT – Clean Clothes Campaign
CHALLENGE
Garment industry workers face serious wage discriminations and are forced to survive on a ‘poverty’ rather than a ‘living’ wage.
OUTCOME

Three animated videos used internally by Clean Clothes Campaign providing information on key issues concerning the garment industry’s relationship to its workers.

IMPACT

Raising awareness on ways the garment industry violates human rights, and the role of consumers in taking action to better the lives of workers.

By the 21st century, it has become common knowledge that the clothes we buy and wear have probably travelled across many borders. Where they come from, how brands produce them, and who their employees are that make these clothes are all questions a consumer does not necessarily have answers to. The Clean Clothes Campaign is the garment industry’s largest network of labour unions and non-governmental organisations that shows the world: how, in reality, garment workers survive on less than sufficient income. The campaign attempts to direct structural changes in the protection and empowerment of these workers. Its impact is global in providing solidary support for labourers by raising awareness about their human rights violations.

Bumbuku took on the task of producing three impactful animation videos for the Clean Clothes Campaign. The client’s objective was to vividly portray the everyday struggles of workers surviving on a poverty wage, as opposed to a living wage. Driven by our commitment to issues of garment worker rights and sustainable clothing practices, we embarked on an extensive research process to inform the content of the animations. Our journey involved delving into the nuanced dynamics of the garment industry, and understanding the mechanisms by which clothing brands operate and potentially exploit their workers in developing countries. Additionally, we explored avenues for improving the economic lifestyles of these workers, ensuring that our animations were not only visually compelling but also deeply informed by a comprehensive understanding of the issues at hand.

We researched images and stories of real garment workers worldwide and found common themes. Most workers were women with sad and frustrated emotional facial expressions. Inspired by their reality, all illustrated characters in the animations reflect this feeling of dispiritedness. We also paid attention to the geographical context of where these garment factories are located in the world. Based on this, the backgrounds and characters seen in the animations reflect specific communities of women from countries like Cambodia and India.

We also found details about workers’ rights such as: while working twelve to sixteen hours a day, they live in small rooms with their families that normally come without windows and bathrooms; they are often forced to skip meals to survive financially; and cannot afford to fall sick and pay for medical treatment.

After much careful research and understanding of what the Clean Clothes Campaign stands for, the frustrations of garment workers were shown in the animations to invoke empathy in the viewer. This way, Bumbuku was successfully able to show their daily experiences of struggle.

Clean Clothes Campaign was pleased with the animations as they aligned with the organisation’s overarching agenda of protecting garment workers’ rights. While the videos covered the most important themes, lesser-known but important facts were also presented. For instance, thirty per cent of clothes produced end up unsold and burnt – money and effort wasted that could otherwise go towards workers’ income and a danger to the environment. This is one of many cases where protecting labour wages in the garment industry merges with related issues of sustainable clothing and gender discrimination.

Garment workers all around the world fight for their rights. Overall, our animations bring forth the campaign’s mission, part of which is to inform consumers that they have the power to support this fight. The power to invert poverty into a living wage and pressure brands to distribute their profits more reasonably. By becoming engaged consumers, we can all participate in this global problem. We believe all garment workers should be paid a wage they can live on because having a job should mean being able to support yourself and your family sustainably.
