TRANSFORMING SCIENTIFIC INSIGHTS INTO CLEAR STORIES

Bumbuku partnered with Aarhus University and 21 European industries and universities in a significant project called INTERfaces, supported by a EUR 3.7 million grant from the EU research and innovation program. Our role was to bridge the gap between complex scientific research and the general public by transforming data into engaging stories through animation videos and design. We also provided Digital Storytelling Training to empower scientists to communicate their findings effectively.

CLIENT – AARHUS UNIVERSITY / INTERFACES PROJECT

CHALLENGE

Conveying the insights and research data of a complex scientific project to the general public and creating awareness
of the environmental problems it aims to solve.

OUTCOME
Transforming their data into compelling stories, visualising them through animation videos and design, and empowering scientists with Digital Storytelling Training to communicate their findings effectively.
IMPACT

Bridging the gap between scientific research and the public, ultimately contributing to the creation of 100% pure, natural, and sustainable chemical products for one of the world’s most polluting industries.

The INTERfaces project, coordinated by the accomplished Associate Professor Selin Kara, an expert in biocatalysis and bioprocess development at Aarhus University, Denmark, brings together nine academic institutions and 13 private sector organizations. This groundbreaking project also offers a unique study program, training the next generation of European biotechnology researchers with 14 selected PhD candidates.

Bumbuku is proud to be a part of this initiative, focusing on digital storytelling. Our contribution involves communicating research findings to a broader audience through communication strategies and materials.

The project’s aim is to replicate natural bioprocesses for use in the chemical industry, creating 100% pure, natural, and sustainable chemical products by mimicking the metabolism of living organisms. This innovative approach holds great promise for one of the world’s most polluting industries and showcases the fantastic teamwork of scientists striving for a better, sustainable future.

Over the past three years, we have worked tirelessly to transform complex research data and information into accessible content for the general public. This involved extensive background research about the project, enzymes, and their functions, as well as uncovering the core idea and mission behind the project to raise awareness about the issue. We visualized and digitalized the story through animation videos and created print materials for project events. Our work has received recognition from industry professionals along this journey.

Successful applied science not only needs to be interdisciplinary, but should also be at the interface between ground-breaking research and industrial implementation. Therefore, the strong involvement of three large companies and ten high-tech start-ups is crucial to achieve our goals in this project.

The first video in our animation series, “A New Way of Thinking,” explaining the project’s mission and vision, has been awarded the Platinum Winner in the Science and Technology Video Category at the MUSE Creative Awards 2022.

The MUSE Awards, hosted by the International Awards Associate (IAA), celebrate excellence in creative and design, and our animation stands out among over
6,000 entries worldwide.

Empowering Scientists with Digital Storytelling Training:

Self-Sufficient Storytelling for Data Narratives

One of our primary missions is to empower organizations to tell their stories effectively. In line with this mission, we will provide Digital Storytelling training to researchers and scientists involved in the INTERfaces project. This training will help them communicate their research findings to the public and foster communication within the industry to implement such innovation.
