Transforming Scientific Research Into A Public Story

BUMBUKU partnered with Aarhus University and 21 other European industries and universities with a grant of EUR 3.7 million from the EU research and innovation programme in a major project; INTERFACES.

CLIENT – AARHUS UNIVERSITY / INTERFACES PROJECT
CHALLENGE
Help communicate a complex scientific project’s insights and the research data with the general public and create awareness on the environmental problems it will solve.
OUTCOME
Transforming their data into a story and visualising it with animation videos and design; Helping scientists communicate findings on their own with Digital Storytelling Trainings.
IMPACT
Bridging the gap between research and public in creating 100 per cent pure, natural and sustainable chemical products for one of the world’s most polluting industries.
INTERfaces project is coordinated by a very successful female scientist, Associate Professor Selin Kara, an expert in biocatalysis and bioprocess development from the Department of Engineering at Aarhus University, Denmark. A total of 9 academic institutions and 13 private sector organisations, ranging from high-tech SMEs to large-scale production companies, are taking part in the project.

As Bumbuku, we are honoured to be one of these organisations. The project also offers a unique study programme, in which 14 selected PhD candidates will be trained as the next generation of European biotechnology researchers.

The aim of the project is to replicate natural bioprocesses for use in the chemical industry; create 100 per cent pure, natural and sustainable chemical products by mimicking the metabolism of living organisms. The project is potentially ground-breaking for one of the world’s most polluting industries today.

As Bumbuku our part in this project is, of course, digital storytelling. We will be transforming complex data and information about the research and its findings in time for the general public. This includes an extensive background research about the project itself, enzymes, and how they work in nature. Also finding the core idea and mission behind the project to raise awareness about the issue. Afterwards, we visualise and digitalise the story by animation videos, and create print materials to contribute to the events organised for the project. We will be producing many visuals throughout the project.

Successful applied science not only needs to be interdisciplinary, but should also be at the interface between ground-breaking research and industrial implementation. Therefore, the strong involvement of companies is crucial to achieve our goals in this project.

DIGITAL STORYTELLING TRAININGS TO HELP SCIENTISTS SELF-SUFFICIENTLY TELL THE STORY OF THEIR OWN DATA
One of our main missions is to help organisations self-sufficiently tell their stories. In order to achieve this goal, at the end, we will give Digital Storytelling Trainings to researchers and scientists involved in the project in order to help them tell the story of their research findings to communicate their data to the public and open communication within the industry to implement such innovation.

SDG IMPACT

This project contributes to 3 SDGs and as Bumbuku we are trilled to be part of these goals.
